I was sick of looking at that sad, plain, boring wall behind my bed but refused to pay $500 and above for the lovely fancy headboards that I've seen in high end stores such as West Elm, Ballard Designs etc. So I decided to tackle a project that I have been putting on the back burner for a LONG time. I needed to make a tufted headboard STAT!
I want this....
To look more like this....
Here's the plan (or at least what the decor voices in my head told me to do)
My mom bought me this asian screen on clearance from Target years ago when they were doing that whole Global Bazaar thing. Back then I was really into asian decor. However today it simply no longer goes with anything in our place! So I decided rather than having to buy plywood at Lowe's and starting from scratch (which you still can do for cheap-see below details),why not use it as a base for my headboard! Katie likey saving money!
So here's what I did (well...what my husband and I did...because he gets dragged into every project I do!)
Supplies:
-Desired color fabric.
I used a flat sheet that I already had. However I do suggest if you want to do your headboard in white, instead use drapery lining so you can't see through. It is actually cheaper at Joanns Fabric than regular fabric by the yard. Sign up on their website and they will send you coupons to get this for even less $$$$
-Batting
Michael's or even select Walmart's carry bags of these. If you decide to get it at Michaels, sign up on their website and you can print out a 40% off coupon before you go!
-Decorative buttons/bling for tufts
-Staple gun
-Hot glue gun & gluesticks
*Optional items*
-1 sheet of Plywood
This is if you do not currently have a headboard frame to use as a base. I suggest using a tape measure and start measuring from the bed frame and up your wall to figure out what size headboard you would like. Once you make the trip to Lowe's they can cut the plywood down to your desired size
-1 2x4 cut in half equally
This is so your headboard can stand behind your bed or even attach to your bed frame. Since I already had a frame and didn't use Plywood, we simply added these anchors from Lowe's to the back and hung it on the wall like a large picture. Is very secure and hasnt fallen on us once!
Instructions:
-Cover one side of the headboard/plywood with desired amount of batting. The more plush you want it the more batting you will use. Thanks for your help Laila!
-Secure batting by stapling to headboard/plywood
-Once desired amount of batting is attached to headboard/plywood, lie fabric over top and pull tightly wrapping the ends of the fabric to the back side of the headboard/plywood. Be sure to pull taught and staple to the back. Work your way around the whole piece and repeat this process until all of the fabric is stapled. It will end up looking something like this.
-When this step is complete you now want to decide how many tufts you would like on your headboard. Using a pen or marker, place a dot where you want your tufts to begin and use a measuring tape to ensure the same distance between each tuft. You can make as many rows as you choose. Once you are done marking, staple each of the dots to create your "tuft". When you are all done simply use your hot glue gun to attach your buttons or bling.
There you go. You have yourself a beautiful DIY tufted headboard!!!!!! :)
Isn't she lovely?
Love how it's now the focal point of the room
You may have noticed that I added a few more accessories to the room such as tall mirrors, a sign from Home Goods and even a few DIY pillows. Still a total work in progress but I will be sure to tell you all about that in my upcoming posts. Don't forget to comment or email me at catherineelizabethcreations@gmail.com with any questions! I'd love to hear from everyone! Until next time...Happy DIY-ing!
